Rhee designer Cherry Kim specializes in one-off garments and accessories.

She spent 250+ hours constructing a chair-sized glove for a hand-shaped chair for Artist & Residence, curated by Daniel Arsham in collaboration with StockX for Milan Design Week. The piece was shipped to the exhibition, but never arrived. I helped to position the ensuing campaign, ‘Missing’, and wrote its copy.

Upon completion, Kim’s piece was collected by a UPS driver to be transported to the exhibition site—but it never arrived. After thoroughly investigating the chair’s whereabouts with UPS security, their staff concluded that the driver was most likely not a UPS driver, but an impersonator dressed in the emblematic brown uniform. The hypothesis? It was an “inside job” whereby an actual UPS employee noted the declared value of the piece and tipped a partner off to steal it. The designer obtained security footage from her landlord in which the thief’s face is fully visible—yet no one from UPS recognizes him. UPS is currently investigating the driver in question.

Kim’s piece intended to challenge the rigidity of furniture by enhancing its value, with the cover acting as a practical, ephemeral tool for transformation. The irony is that the notion of ‘value’ in its most literal, monetary sense is what lured our opportunistic thief— though the piece is likely of little value to this person.
